The format still works—if you use it correctly.

The press release has survived another funeral.

Every few years somebody announces that the format is dead. Then companies, labels,
nonprofits, publicists, artists and governments keep publishing them.

The reason is simple.

A good press release performs a useful job.

It establishes a structured public record.

Who did what?

When?

Where?

Why does it matter?

Who can be contacted?

Where are the assets?

That function has not become less relevant in 2026. It may have become more useful
as search expands beyond traditional search engines.

EIN Presswire has been discussing press releases in the context of AI-driven discovery
and generative search. Its argument is that clear, structured, publicly accessible
releases can contribute signals that search and AI systems may encounter when gathering
information about a company, person or event.

That does not make the release magic.

A press release does not guarantee journalism.

Distribution is not the same as earned media.

And sending a release to 500 people does not mean 500 people cared.

For independent artists, it helps to separate four jobs.

### The release

This is the factual document.

It contains the announcement, names, dates, quotes, links and contact information.

### The pitch

This tells one specific editor, journalist, host or curator why the story belongs
with _their_ audience.

### The assets

Photos, cover art, music, video, credits, bios and links make the story easier to
use.

### The angle

This is the part most artists skip.

“New single out Friday” is an announcement.

It is not automatically a story.

Maybe the story is the technology behind the release. Maybe it is a neighborhood,
a collaboration, an unusual recording method, a cultural connection, a business
model or a live event.

The release documents the facts.

The angle creates interest.

In the AI-search era, another layer matters: consistency.

If your website says one thing, your distributor profile says something else and
your press release spells the artist name a third way, machines have the same problem
humans do.

Clear public information has value.

So yes, independent artists may still need press releases.

Just stop asking the release to be the publicist, the journalist, the search strategy
and the story all at once.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** For your next important release, prepare four separate things:
release, targeted pitch, asset folder and story angle. If all four are the same
document, the campaign is not ready.

One release can open more than one revenue stream.

Independent artists ask the wrong question all the time.

“How much does Spotify pay?”

That is worth understanding.

But it is a small question compared with:

“How many businesses can one song enter?”

Imagine you release one independent single.

The master goes to streaming services.

The composition is registered with the appropriate rights organizations.

A clean version goes into the DJ pool.

An instrumental is prepared for sync.

The song becomes part of the live show.

A performance video goes to YouTube.

A limited physical version gets sold directly.

The cover becomes a shirt.

The stems become useful for a remix.

The story behind the record becomes editorial content.

The same recording has now moved through multiple commercial environments without
becoming seven different songs.

That is the point.

One song can create multiple assets.

### The master

The recorded performance itself is an asset. Distribution, neighboring rights where
applicable, licensing and direct sales can all connect to it.

### The composition

Songwriting is its own asset. Performance royalties, mechanical royalties and synchronization
can involve the underlying musical work separately from the master recording.

### The visual

A music video can create advertising revenue, social clips, still photography and
promotion while increasing the useful life of the release.

### The physical object

Vinyl, CDs, cassettes and limited packages can turn an infinitely streamable file
into something finite.

### The live version

A song performed onstage can sell tickets, deepen the audience relationship and
sometimes become a separate recorded product.

### Sync

The original master, alternate mix, instrumental and stems can make a song more
usable for film, television, games, advertising and other licensed media.

### Direct fan business

Bundles, signed products, memberships, private releases and fan experiences are
not “extra” if the artist plans them from the beginning.

None of these revenue streams is automatic.

That is important.

A song does not become profitable because somebody made a checklist with fourteen
boxes. Every channel has costs, rights requirements and an audience question.

But thinking in systems changes the release conversation.

Instead of asking how many streams you need to survive, ask what you built around
the record.

Streaming can still be the front door.

It just should not have to be the whole house.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** For the next release, build the asset map before release day:
master, instrumental, clean, performance video, artwork, physical option, sync metadata,
direct-sale offer and live use.

Mechanical royalties may still be waiting.

“I registered the song with my PRO.”

Good.

That still does not necessarily mean every songwriter royalty has been handled.

The problem is that musicians often use the word _royalties_ as though it describes
one payment.

It does not.

A commercial recording can involve master-side revenue and composition-side revenue.
On the composition side alone, performance and mechanical royalties travel through
different systems.

The Mechanical Licensing Collective administers the U.S. blanket mechanical license
for eligible streaming and download services. Digital services send usage data and
royalties to The MLC, which matches those uses to registered musical works and distributes
eligible mechanical royalties to members.

That is different from what a performing-rights organization such as ASCAP, BMI
or SESAC primarily does.

If you are a self-administered songwriter—meaning you control your own publishing
and are responsible for registering your own compositions—The MLC says you should
become a member if you are entitled to collect U.S. digital audio mechanical royalties.

Membership itself is free.

But there is still work involved.

Your songs have to be represented accurately. Titles, writers, ownership shares
and related information need to match. The sound recording has to connect to the
right composition. If the metadata is incomplete, inconsistent or missing, identifying
the correct rightsholder becomes harder.

This is one reason independent artists can have music performing reasonably well
while the money map still feels confusing.

Different rights are being paid through different channels.

A simple way to think about one U.S. interactive stream is:

The recording generates master-side revenue.

The composition may generate performance royalties.

The composition may also generate mechanical royalties.

Then contracts determine who ultimately receives each portion.

That is why distribution is not publishing administration.

A distributor getting your master onto Spotify does not automatically mean your
composition-side registrations are complete.

And registering a song with a PRO does not automatically mean the U.S. digital mechanical
side is complete either.

Before opening another royalty account, first determine whether you already have
a publisher or publishing administrator handling this work. You do not want duplicate
claims.

But if you are truly self-administered, understand the responsibilities that come
with that control.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** Pick one released song and trace it from master ownership through
publishing, PRO registration and mechanical administration. If you cannot identify
who handles each layer, start there.

Transparency rules are moving into music.

The AI conversation in music is moving past one question.

“Can we make this?”

The next question is becoming:

“What do we have to tell people about how it was made?”

Article 50 of the European Union’s AI Act began applying on August 2, 2026. The
new transparency framework covers several situations involving interactive AI systems,
AI-generated or manipulated content, deepfakes and machine-readable marking.

That does not mean every hi-hat touched by software needs a warning label.

The rules are more specific than that.

Providers of certain AI systems have obligations around informing users when they
are interacting with AI and around adding machine-readable marks to generated or
manipulated content. Deployers have disclosure duties in areas including deepfakes
and some AI-generated material involving matters of public interest.

For music businesses, this matters because a modern release is bigger than the audio
master.

It can include:

 * cover art,
 * music videos,
 * synthetic vocals,
 * avatars,
 * promotional photography,
 * lyric videos,
 * translated performances,
 * artist likenesses,
 * social campaigns.

An artist may be operating in the United States while distributing globally. A label
may use tools built by companies in another jurisdiction. Content can cross borders
instantly.

The most practical response is not fear.

It is documentation.

Keep records of what tools were used. Save source files. Know whether a voice was
synthetic, cloned or simply processed. Know whether an image contains a real person
whose likeness has been substantially altered. Know what the distributor or platform
asks you to disclose.

Most importantly, separate “AI-assisted” from “AI-generated” in your own thinking.

Using an AI noise-removal tool is not the same creative act as generating a singer
who never existed. Using machine learning to isolate stems is not the same as cloning
another artist’s voice. The details matter.

Transparency is likely to become part of metadata culture whether or not every territory
adopts identical rules.

That can actually help independent artists.

A creator who can clearly explain what was made, what was generated, what was licensed
and what was performed has a cleaner chain of provenance.

In the next phase of digital music, provenance may be as important as production
quality.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** Add an AI-use field to your internal release checklist now: tool,
asset, purpose, source material, permissions and disclosure requirement.

Streaming won discovery. Ownership still matters.

Streaming won the argument about convenience.

It did not win every argument about value.

The recorded-music business is overwhelmingly digital, but physical music has refused
to disappear. RIAA year-end data for 2025 put U.S. vinyl revenue above $1 billion,
with total physical recorded-music revenue rising to roughly $1.38 billion. Meanwhile,
industry reporting in 2026 has pointed to renewed CD growth and younger listeners
treating physical formats as collectibles, souvenirs and a way to support artists
directly.

That is not a return to 1998.

It is something more interesting.

Physical music no longer has to carry the entire job of delivering the song. Streaming
handles access. A record, CD or cassette can now do a different job: ownership.

That changes the product.

A fan buying a physical release today may be buying:

 * a signed object,
 * limited artwork,
 * liner notes,
 * photographs,
 * alternate packaging,
 * a numbered edition,
 * direct access,
 * a memory from a show,
 * evidence that they were there early.

For independent artists, that distinction matters.

The old question was whether physical media could compete with digital distribution.

The better question is how the two can work together.

Use streaming to remove friction. Let somebody discover the song immediately. Then
give the listener somewhere to go if they want a deeper relationship.

The Recording Academy has even adjusted some packaging eligibility rules to recognize
direct-to-fan physical releases sold through artist and label websites. The broader
signal is clear: direct physical product remains part of the modern marketplace.

The danger is over-ordering.

Physical media is powerful when it is intentional. A small run of 100 records that
sells through can be healthier than 1,000 boxes sitting in a garage. CDs can be
inexpensive enough to become merch-table entry points. Cassettes can function as
collectible editions. Vinyl can become a premium product.

The strategy is not “leave streaming.”

It is “stop asking streaming to do every job.”

Discovery can be digital.

Ownership can be physical.

Community can happen in both places.

That is the hybrid model.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** Before manufacturing anything, decide what makes the physical
version different from the stream. If the answer is only “you can hold it,” the
package probably is not finished.

Original visuals are becoming valuable again.

For a while, music videos started to feel like expensive attachments to songs.

Then every artist became a content producer.

Now we live in a flood of vertical clips, lyric snippets, performance fragments,
AI images, behind-the-scenes footage and short-form edits. There is more visual
content around music than ever.

That is exactly why a real visual idea matters again.

The difference is not necessarily budget. It is intention.

A music video can still do something a ten-second clip rarely does: establish a
world. It can tell us how the artist sees the record, what the characters look like,
what the environment feels like, what the symbols mean and what the audience should
remember when the song stops.

That world can be handmade. It can be animated. It can be one room, one performance,
one continuous take or one strange idea executed well.

The Recording Academy and major video awards still separate disciplines such as
direction, cinematography, editing, art direction and visual effects for a reason.
The strongest videos are collaborations between music and filmmaking, not simply
advertising around an audio file.

For independent artists, the economics have changed too.

One strong video can become:

 * the full YouTube piece,
 * multiple vertical edits,
 * still photography,
 * thumbnails,
 * teaser loops,
 * press assets,
 * behind-the-scenes clips,
 * visualizers,
 * social headers,
 * tour-screen content.

That makes a video less like a single marketing expense and more like a source library.

The trap is creating twenty disposable pieces because the platforms told you to
stay active.

Activity is not identity.

When everybody can generate something quickly, work that feels considered becomes
easier to recognize.

The question for an artist is no longer, “Can we afford a big video?”

It is, “What visual idea belongs to this song?”

That question is much more useful.

A warehouse performance can work if the lighting, framing and performance are specific.
Stop-motion can work because the texture becomes part of the song. A narrative can
work without celebrity cameos. A visualizer can work if it actually moves, develops
and gives the viewer something to watch.

The video does not have to prove how much money was spent.

It should prove that the artist has a point of view.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** Before shooting anything, write the visual concept in one sentence.
If the idea cannot survive one sentence, the production may be decorating a song
instead of building a world.

What to register before fees rise.

The U.S. Copyright Office is preparing its first fee change since 2020, and that
makes October a good month for independent artists to do something most of us put
off too long: clean up the catalog.

In July 2026, the Copyright Office submitted a proposed new fee schedule to Congress
after a multi-year cost study. Under the law, the Office can institute the new fees
after a 120-day congressional review period unless Congress passes legislation rejecting
them. The Office says it is aiming to implement the new schedule in fall 2026.

That does not mean panic-registering everything in a hard drive.

It means knowing what you actually own.

For musicians, one release can contain multiple copyrightable pieces. The song itself
is one copyright. The sound recording is another. Cover art may be separately protected.
Video, photography and liner-note text can carry their own rights. Collaborations
can complicate ownership even further.

The current Copyright Office fee schedule still lists $45 for an eligible Single
Application and $65 for the Standard Application. Those amounts are useful reference
points now, but the larger lesson is that filing costs are not static.

The smartest move is an audit.

Start with music already released. Ask whether the composition and master have been
properly documented. Then move to unreleased work that is genuinely finished and
likely to be commercially used. Confirm writers, splits, publishers, producers and
master owners before filing anything.

One distinction matters: copyright protection does not suddenly appear because you
filed a registration. Copyright generally exists when an original work is fixed
in a tangible medium. Registration, however, provides important legal and administrative
benefits, and timing can matter when a creator later needs to enforce rights.

The worst time to discover that your paperwork is confused is after a song starts
moving.

Independent music businesses spend enormous energy on promotion while leaving ownership
records unfinished. That is backwards. Metadata, registrations, split sheets and
contracts are not glamorous, but they are part of the product.

So the headline is not really that copyright costs more.

The headline is that unfinished rights administration already costs artists money.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** Make a list of completed songs, masters, artwork and videos.
Mark what is registered, what is not, who owns each element, and what needs documentation
before the new fee schedule takes effect.

She caught the bug anyway.

Every creative family eventually reaches a generation that grows up surrounded by
history but not necessarily inside the same circumstances.

The next voice may not live in the same city. She may not grow up in the same rehearsal
rooms. She may have access to different tools, different references and different
ways to publish. She may encounter the family story later, after forming an identity
of her own.

That does not make the inheritance weaker.

It makes the transformation visible.

The next generation can receive a creative impulse without receiving a script. She
may hear a song, watch a performance, notice a voice, or simply feel the energy
in a room and decide that she wants to make something too. Sometimes the “bug” arrives
before anyone can explain where it came from.

That is the hopeful part of Blueprint Sankofa. Creative inheritance does not require
perfect proximity. It can survive distance, changing technology, complicated family
histories and different definitions of success.

What matters is whether the older generation makes room for curiosity instead of
demanding duplication.

Young artists need access to stories, but they also need permission to disagree
with them. They need to know what their elders built without being told that the
past is a cage. They need examples of discipline without being denied experimentation.

The next voice may choose a new genre, a new instrument or a new platform. She may
write songs, produce beats, sing, design, film, organize or combine several forms
that did not previously share a name. That is not a departure from the blueprint.
It is what the blueprint was for.

The responsibility of the present generation is to preserve the evidence and protect
the freedom. Tell the names accurately. Share the recordings and photographs. Explain
the sacrifices. Then leave enough open space for the next artist to become unmistakably
herself.

The inheritance is not complete when the story is remembered.

It is complete when somebody uses it to make something new.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** Give the next creative person in your family access to the archive,
then ask what they want to change. Their answer may be the next chapter.

Different tools. Same instinct.

Creative inheritance does not always arrive through the same medium.

Joel Andrew Utterbach Sr. is remembered in this story through bass, architecture,
building, humor and creativity. Those details may appear to belong to separate categories,
but they share an instinct: the instinct to understand structure and make something
work.

The bass sits inside music. Architecture sits inside space. Building turns an idea
into a physical form. Humor changes the emotional temperature of a room. Creativity
moves through all of them.

That is why a family blueprint should not be reduced to a list of musicians. The
deeper inheritance may be problem-solving, rhythm, proportion, patience, curiosity
or the willingness to work with materials until they become something useful.

A bassist understands time from inside the ensemble. A builder understands weight,
balance and connection. Both require attention to what happens beneath the surface.
Both reward consistency. Both can make other people’s contributions stronger by
giving them a foundation.

For the next generation, those lessons can become music production, writing, design,
technology, business or community work. The tool changes. The instinct remains.

This is especially important for artists who believe they must imitate the exact
career of the person who came before them. Inheritance is not imitation. A child
does not have to play the same instrument to carry forward the same seriousness.
A producer does not have to become a bassist. A rapper does not have to repeat a
parent’s route through music.

The question is: what way of seeing did you receive?

Maybe it was the habit of fixing things instead of discarding them. Maybe it was
the ability to hear a pattern. Maybe it was humor under pressure. Maybe it was the
belief that a small project deserved care.

Those are creative tools too.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** Write down three non-musical skills you learned from a parent,
elder or mentor. Then identify how each one appears in your current creative or
business practice.

Discipline in plain sight.

Cynthia Utterbach’s story is a reminder that performance is not only about talent.
It is about preparation becoming invisible.

The audience sees the finished moment: the entrance, the phrasing, the confidence,
the way a singer holds attention. What the audience does not always see is the repetition
behind it. The rehearsal. The correction. The waiting. The adjustment when the room,
band or arrangement does not behave as expected.

One of the memories at the center of this cover story is a theater rehearsal: a
moment of preparation that may look ordinary from the outside but becomes meaningful
when viewed through a family archive. Rehearsal is where a performer learns how
to make difficult work appear natural.

That lesson crosses generations and genres.

In an era that rewards immediate posting, preparation can feel old-fashioned. Artists
are encouraged to publish constantly, even when the work is not ready. But visibility
without readiness can create a permanent record of unfinished thinking.

Cynthia’s example offers another approach. Practice is not the opposite of spontaneity.
Practice gives spontaneity somewhere to live.

Her work also expands the family blueprint through a woman’s creative labor. Women
in music are often remembered through a narrow set of roles: singer, muse, mother,
collaborator. The fuller story includes discipline, leadership, memory, musicianship
and the ability to hold creative standards inside a family and a community.

The point is not to turn one person into a symbol so large that the human being
disappears. It is to preserve the specific details that make the contribution real:
where she performed, who she worked with, what she practiced, what she taught and
what younger people observed.

For Joel and the generations that followed, Cynthia’s example is not simply that
music was present in the household. It is that music demanded attention.

That may be the most important inheritance of all.

**G.U.M.M. Move:** Choose one part of your craft to rehearse privately before you
present it publicly. Document the process. Let the finished work show the discipline
without needing to announce it.
