_Soulja’s global argument is almost mischievously simple: the world does not need
Sudanese music to erase itself before listening. The language can stay. The slang
can stay. The rhythmic memory can stay. The audience can do some of the traveling._

## The audience can lean in

OkayAfrica named Soulja its October 2026 Artist of the Month around a proposition
that is useful far beyond one artist: global reach does not have to mean cultural
subtraction. Soulja has spent the decade building an audience in Sudan, across North
Africa and the Middle East, and increasingly beyond the region while continuing
to rap in Sudanese Arabic and drawing from Sudanese traditions alongside contemporary
hip-hop, Afrobeats and amapiano. That mix is easy to describe badly. “Fusion” can
become a word that erases where everything came from. Soulja’s work is more specific.
His cadence, dialect and references remain a fixed point while the production around
them can change. People who do not speak the language are still invited into the
rhythm. That is a meaningful reversal of the old export model, where artists from
outside the U.S. or Western Europe were often encouraged to flatten accent, language,
instrumentation or local reference so gatekeepers could imagine a market for them.

> **PULL QUOTE:** Global reach is not proof that you translated yourself. Sometimes
> it is proof that the audience finally leaned in.

## Zero views, full interior life

His September EP _0 Views_, released through SVNBIRDS / EMPIRE, is four tracks and
less than nine minutes, but its concept is deliberately inward. The project moves
through isolation, pressure, sarcasm, confidence and an attempt to climb back out
of a negative mental spiral. An accompanying short film places another person at
the center rather than making Soulja himself the visual protagonist. That choice
matters. A music story about Sudan in 2026 can too easily become a conflict story
with an artist attached. Soulja has explicitly resisted having his work reduced
to sympathy for a country in crisis. The music deserves to be heard because it is
music—not because listeners feel obligated to perform concern. That does not mean
the crisis disappears from the work. It means tragedy is not the only frame through
which Sudanese creativity is allowed to be legible.

**G.U.M.M. TAKEAWAY:** Cultural specificity is not a barrier that must be removed
before international discovery. It can be the thing that makes the work travel.

## Tradition is not a costume department

Soulja’s interest in Sudanese musical traditions is part research, part instinct
and part generational bridge. His public conversations describe a young generation
rediscovering sounds and cultural languages that political disruption, migration
and changing media habits helped scatter. That is where “PASS IT FORWARD” becomes
more than a cover line. Passing culture forward does not require freezing it at
the point an older generation remembers. It requires enough respect to know what
you are changing. Soulja can move toward amapiano, Afrobeats, modern rap or soul-
inflected production while remaining recognizably Sudanese because the relationship
is active rather than decorative. Tradition is not the costume department of contemporary
music.

## A bigger map

The most exciting version of global music is not a single worldwide sound. It is
a bigger map filled with places that remain themselves. Soulja’s rise suggests that
audiences are more capable of listening across language than many old industry assumptions
allowed. The work still needs distribution, marketing, touring, press, strong collaborators
and infrastructure. But it does not need to arrive pre-erased. For G.U.M.M., that
is the story: not “Sudanese rapper goes global,” but an artist testing whether global
can finally mean the world comes toward him too.

tone and rhythm tell you before the dictionary enters the room.
